Community Gardens

In December 2005, a substantial gift was received for the purpose of establishing and supporting community gardens in Harpswell. Community gardens are places where individuals can be assigned a plot of land to cultivate; all the plots together at a given location make up a community garden.

Harpswell Community Gardens will be managed by the gardeners and volunteers, and will range from wildlife gardens to fruit, flower, and vegetable gardens. They are to be available for use by all Harpswell residents, winter and summer. The desire of the donor, and the intent of the Trust, is to make the gardens as accessible as possible by locating them in or near Harpswell's villages. They can be places where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together for fun, recreation, and fresh vegetables. The donor has expressed the desire that the gardens help promote organic gardening practices, be handicapped accessible, and be utilized as learning opportunities for Harpswell school children.

If you are interested in helping to organize a community garden in your neighborhood, contact the Land Trust at info@hhltmaine.org, by mail at P.O. Box 359, Harpswell, ME 04079, or by phone at 207-833-5566.
