The open field at the head of Mackerel Cove has been a community landmark for generations. Overlooking one of Maine's most scenic working harbors, the field has offered residents of Harpswell a place for family picnics, community suppers, wintertime sledding, quiet moments of reflection, and spectacular views of the ocean and western mountains. The field at Mackerel Cove was slated to be sold as a private home site, which would have forever restricted the community's use and enjoyment of this local treasure. The Trust's acquisition of this property in 2002, through the generosity of donors to its Special Places for Harpswell Campaign, assures permanent public access to the field and shore, and permanent protection of the historic and scenic view.
In 2006, the Trust named the field in memory of Frances and Glendon Johnson, long-time Bailey Island residents who had a particular interest in maintaining public access to the scenic beauty and shore of the island.
