Spruce Point consists of 16 acres of forest and 32 acres of intertidal marsh and mudflats. Its 2970 feet of shoreline lie on the southern shore of Skolfield Cove adjacent to the old Indian portage, (from which the name "Merrucooneag", meaning "lazy carry", was thought to be derived). This is the narrowest part of Harpswell Neck, and Indians traveling by canoe found it the best place to portage, saving them a long and often difficult trip around the tip of the peninsula. As one rounds the curve of the Harpswell Road (Route 123) heading south into Harpswell, Spruce Point, Liberty Farm, Merrucooneagan Farm, and Skolfield Shores present a highly scenic, pastoral view at the gateway to Harpswell. Its marine habitats are considered of high value to waterfowl, wading birds, shore birds, and many other marine organisms.
